Applications and Interviews

Each year we receive hundreds of applications and resumes in January. Competition for these positions is fierce. Obviously we can't hire everyone we would like to. If we feel that you may have what it takes to be a Tour Leader, you will be invited in for an interview. After the individual interviews, we subject the best candidates to a group interview later in the month. Our team is then selected from the best candidates from the group interviews. It's a long process, but we have to be sure candidates are right for the job and the job is right for them. Hiring is complete by the end of February.

"What is a Tour Leader?"

When you were in elementary or high school and traveled with your teachers and classmates to another city and stayed overnight, chances are you had an educational Tour Leader (or guide) with your group. If they were good, you might remember them. If they were great, you’ve never forgotten them.

"What will I do on the job?"
  • Accompany the group for the duration of the tour (3-5 days/week)
  • Teach the students about the history, geography, art, and culture of the place they are visiting in a fun and exciting way
  • Lead walking tours and discussions, visiting and pointing out the most relevant and interesting places of interest
  • Manage the details of the tour to ensure everything runs smoothly by working with the various suppliers (motor coach drivers, accommodations, restaurants, and sites of interest)
  • Keep the students interested and engaged through creative teaching techniques, games, activities, and stories appropriate for the subject, age or grade level of the students
  • Inspire the students to continue traveling, learning, and experiencing new things throughout their lives
  • Encourage them to think and act responsibly with regards to the environment and as citizens of a global community
  • Come to our office in Toronto each Sunday evening for a weekly guide meeting and supplemental training
"What do I get out of it?"
  • Free travel to interesting cities (Ottawa, Quebec, or perhaps New York City)
  • Free admission to museums, galleries, sporting events, and tourist attractions the groups visit
  • Free meals and accommodation while touring
  • Paid training in public speaking, leadership, and management skills
  • Teaching experience and regular contact with teachers
  • Rewarding work with impressionable students aged 12-18
  • Performance and public speaking experience
  • A paycheque (yes!)
"When does the job begin?"

Hiring is complete in February, and training occurs after that through March and April on weekends. Some tours start at the end of April, but most are in May and June.

"Where do the tours leave from and how many days will I be away?"

Most of our tours leave from Southern Ontario, so we ask that our Tour Leaders be able to meet the groups in Toronto or to travel to meet the group before they depart. Most tours last 3-4 days, and most Tour Leaders do one tour each week.

"When does the job end?"

The tour season ends when school ends for elementary students at the end of June. If you are looking for employment in July and August, we have close connections with summer camps (both residential and day) and other travel companies that employ our Tour Leaders after the tour season is over.

"Are there other opportunities?"

Many of our full time office staff were once (and continue to be) Tour Leaders. For some, this seasonal position has become a rewarding life-long career. Being a part of the TUI Student Travel family means other opportunities for mixing travel and work, as well as discounts on vacations and personal travel.

"The Bottom Line"

This job is demanding, challenging, and at times, very difficult. However, it is incredibly fun and the experiences our Tour Leaders have make them better leaders, better teachers, and better people. There really is no other job like this. It truly is the job your friends will envy.
